Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India, and the fourth most populous city in the world, with a total metropolitan area population of approximately 20.5 million. Along with the neighbouring urban areas, including the cities of Navi Mumbai and Thane, it is one of the most populous urban regions in the world.

Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. In 2009, Mumbai was named an Alpha world city. It is also the wealthiest city in India, and has the highest GDP of any city in South, West or Central Asia.Mumbai has been ranked 6th among top 10 global cities on billionaire count, ahead of Shanghai, Paris and Los Angeles.The capital city of Maharashtra, Mumbai, is fondly known as the ‘city that never sleeps’. This fast moving city of India is also the commercial, financial as well as entertainment capital of the country. Mumbai is one of those cities of India which is known for its historical significance, it is a city of varied cultural heritage. Owing to its historical significance, Mumbai has numerous places of tourist interst. The city is originally made of seven islands.

Mumbai city is a shopaholic’s paradise. Tourists visiting Mumbai can spend lazy afternoon hours browsing through the display window of the various malls.The eminent shopping areas in Mumbai include downtown Mumbai, ColabaDadarBandraJuhu and Linking Road, etc.

One of the prime shopping areas in Mumbai includes the Colaba and Flora Fountain area in the epicenter of south Mumbai. Strategically located at an arm’s length from the Victoria Terminus and Church gate railway stations, pedestrians can pick up shoes, cotton clothes, kaftans, books and ethnic artifacts.

Dadar is another shopper’s paradise with thronging crowds looking to strike a quick bargain in the lively milieu and buy some pretty cotton apparels, saris and children’s clothes, etc.

The uncontested monarch of Mumbai’s suburbs,Bandra is one of the most posh areas of the city where the elite citizens and celebrities reside. With Khar by Linking Road in its vicinity, the flamboyant mega stores housing the major brands find place on both sides of the Bandra roads. However tourists will also find smaller shops in Bandra.

Restaurants:
The fast-paced life here, has given rise to hordes of “fast-food outlets” on almost every road, offering lip-smacking pav bhaji, bhel puri andkababs. There is no dearth, though of multi-culinary delicacies dished out in posh restaurants by expert chefs. Many hotels have in-house restaurants, which usually cater to different palettes. There are innumerable small-scale places offering South Indian Udipi fare, Gujarati thalis, ‘Indian” Chinese, typical North Indian Mughlai food and the current rage of Manglorean fish. Though rest assured, international cuisine is also found here, with choices ranging from Italian pasta to Thai curry and even Lebanese kababs! How To Reach

Rail:
The Mumbai Suburban Railway, popularly known as Locals forms the backbone of the city’s transport system. It is operated by Central Railway and Western Railway. Mumbai’s suburban rail systems carried a total of 6.3 million passengers every day in 2007, which is more than half of the Indian Railways daily carrying capacity. Trains are overcrowded during peak hours, with nine-car trains of rated capacity 1,700 passengers, actually carrying around 4,500 passengers at peak hours. The Mumbai rail network is spread at an expanse of 319 route kilometres. 191 rakes (ratin-sets) of 9 car and 12 car composition are utilised to run a total of 2,226 train services in the city.
Bus:

Mumbai’s bus services carried over 5.5 million passengers per day in 2008. Public buses run by BEST cover almost all parts of the metropolis, as well as parts of Navi Mumbai, Mira-Bhayandar and Thane.The BEST operates a total of 4,608 buses with CCTV Camera installed, ferrying 4.5 million passengers daily over 390 routes. Its fleet consists of single-decker, double-decker, vestibule, low-floor, disabled-friendly, air-conditioned and Euro III compliant diesel and Compressed Natural Gas powered buses. Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses provide intercity transport and connect Mumbai with other major cities of Maharashtra and India. Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) also operates its Volvo buses in Mumbai, from Navi Mumbai to Bandra, Dindoshi and Borivali.
Buses are generally favoured for commuting short to medium distances, while train fares are more economical for longer distance commute.
Road:
Mumbai is served by National Highway 3, National Highway 4, National Highway 8, National Highway 17 and National Highway 222 of India’s National Highways system. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway was the first expressway built in India.Auto rickshaws are allowed to operate only in the suburban areas of Mumbai, while taxis are allowed to operate throughout Mumbai, but generally operate in South Mumbai. Taxis and rickshaws in Mumbai are required by law to run on compressed natural gas (CNG), and are a convenient, economical, and easily available means of transport.
Air:
The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (formerly Sahar International Airport) is the main aviation hub in the city and the second busiest airport in India in terms of passenger traffic. It handled 30.74 million passengers and 656,369 tonnes of cargo during FY 2011-12. An upgrade plan was initiated in 2006, targeted at increasing the capacity of the airport to handle up to 40 million passengers annually.
Sea:
Mumbai is served by two major ports, Mumbai Port Trust and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, which lies just across the creek in Navi Mumbai. Mumbai Port has one of the best natural harbours in the world, and has extensive wet and dry dock accommodation facilities.
